How To Drop Dead Weight…

I know maybe you were thinking this blog was going to relate to your physical weight loss, but no, this weight loss is more about losing dead weight to protect you emotionally and spiritually.

We understand the benefits of losing weight for our physical health, but do we ever consider how the emotional weight and baggage we carry is deadly for our emotional and spiritual well-being ?

You can’t carry dead weight into new seasons.

So, it hit me, I was wondering why It seemed like although I was trying to progress, grow and make changes in my life, as soon as I took 10 steps forward I would get pulled back down. God revealed to me that I was trying to carry dead weight into new seasons, and that’s what was pulling me back down. Be it negative attitudes, bad choices, unhealthy relationships; I thought that I could take these things with me into territory that He specifically created for me to prosper.

He protects us in such a way that He will not allow us to enter into new seasons until we have done away with things that have constantly held us back. At first it may seem that we are being punished, it feels like no matter how much we are trying to get it right we just can’t seem to get through the door that we see right in front of us.

The Bible tells us to forget the former things, and not to dwell on the things of the past (Isaiah 43:18). What exactly are the former things that He is telling us to forget? Not really understanding or even taking the time out to seek what He is saying here we try to continue on with our journey while carrying those ‘former things’. But when you begin to see that things just don’t seem to be working out you have to go back to the scripture and get the understanding before you can move on to the next step.

I’ll ask the question again, what are the former things (dead weight) that God is instructing us to forget? When I think of former things, it makes me take a second to look at my past (not to dwell there but to bring insight). What are the things that had so much of your time and attention that it drained you physically, mentally, emotionally, financially and yes spiritually? Toxic relationships, drinking, partying, bad attitudes, and so much more.

To make things more clear, anything that doesn’t give God the glory is a dead weight. Anything that would bring you harm or corrupt you mind is weight that you can NOT take with you into new seasons.

One would think that if something is harmful then it would automatically get us to stay away from it. Well, just like with fast food, fried foods, and sweets even though it can be harmful to our health we are drawn to it because it makes us feel good temporarily. Now, take a second to consider the things that we find ourselves drawn to for temporary satisfaction. I was drawn to drinking as a way to cope with difficult situations, and toxic relationships as a way to ease loneliness. Being outside of the will of God we pick up all of this deadly weight and then we can’t seem to get rid of it.

Well, thank God for His grace and His mercy! When we finally decide that we are tired of running and trying to figure things out alone, we have the Holy Spirit (Our Personal Trainer) who will be with us every step of the way, LITERALLY (Ezekiel 36:27- I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my Statues, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances)!

Since you have taken a step of faith and decided that you want a transformation in your life He will take the lead. God is so faithful that He tells us specifically what to do in order to drop the dead weight and He is with you while you take those steps. The toxic things your mind was telling you that you needed to survive no longer have control over you. He transforms our minds once we make the decision to not live like everyone else just because it seems “lit” (Romans 12:2).

I remember going through the season of dropping the dead weight. I mean it really feels like a physical weight loss program, in no way is it easy (I won’t act like it is). But the benefits are so fulfilling, you get a peace that surpasses all understanding. Where you once craved those unhealthy desires that added deadly weight to your life, you now crave a deeper understanding for the purpose God has for your life. You want a better understanding of Him, His word and the love He has promised you.

That deadly weight begins to fall off and you begin to feel lighter! You have put on a new self (Ephesians 4:24) you feel restored, your faith shows in the way that you live! That deadly weight no longer has a hold on your life.

In order to drop the dead weight in your life you have to surrender ALL to Him. You have to make the decision that if it doesn’t bring glory to God it is a weight that will be deadly in your life. In order to Protect Your Purpose you have to drop the dead weight.
