Go Back And Look Again!
As a mother I think I say “go back and look again” about 10 times a day, and I promise I’m not exaggerating. I’ll tell my son exactly where I put something and he will go look, come back empty handed and ready to give up. Yes, I’m sure you can imagine the frustration that I feel, when you know exactly where you placed something and you send someone to get it but they’re too impatient to look or wait for it. Children (even adults sometimes) quickly give up on looking for the very things that are often staring them right in the face. So it made me think about the gifts that are deep inside of us, those gifts that God specifically created us for but we allow distractions to keep them hidden. We get so overwhelmed and distracted with everything else that it causes us to lose focus on the very things God put in our hearts to accomplish.
What is that thing God instructed you to do years ago? That business He gave you the insight to start, the book He needed you to write, what stopped you from going forward? The college or trade program He wanted you to attend, did fear or finances stop you?
It took me a few years to write my book “Don’t Go That Way”, I knew that it was required of me, but I was so distracted by everything else that I couldn’t seem to find my starting point. I kept giving up and trying to move on to something else, but none of it worked out. Once I made up in my mind that I couldn’t leave behind what God had for me I decided to go back and look again! So often we give up because we don’t see the results of our prayers right away, we try to move on to what seems like the next best thing, or the easy way out.
We constantly find ourselves looking for that “New” thing when we haven’t even used what God already gave us. The next level of our lives are waiting for us to utilize what God already declared over our lives. I truly believe that everything we need to be successful we already have within us, or we have come across the tools at some point to help activate it.
What did you leave behind that you thought you could move forward without? Did you leave behind your dignity in that toxic relationship? Did social media cause you to lose your focus on what God promised over your life because they dress it up real good and make you feel inadequate? Go back and get your stuff! It’s there, everything that God specifically has for you is there.
1st Kings 18:43- “Go and look toward the sea.” He told his servant. And he went and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back”. The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
This passage really blessed me, it reminded me that even if what I am seeking Him for doesn’t appear before me suddenly, if He declared it then I will continue to believe that it will be there. What if Elijah gave up when the servant returned and said that He didn’t see any sign of rain? God already has a plan for every situation that we encounter in life, He said that He has plans to prosper and not harm us (Jeremiah 29:11). That alone gives me a boost of confidence to not leave behind what He has for me. But how did Elijah know that the rain would come? He was in his prayer posture, on his face seeking God! That’s the thing, we feel that we can get what God has promised for us without God, and that will NEVER happen.
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails”(Proverbs 19:21).
So, I decided that this year would be a year of reevaluating and getting things in order. What did I leave behind on this journey that’s actually necessary for me to move forward? Was I in a rush to get my car packed for the journey that I didn’t bring some of the essentials needed? This is why it’s so important to not run ahead of God, He knows exactly what we need and the specific moment that we need it for. I had to go back and get my joy, my peace, self-respect and everything else I left behind because I was in a rush. You run ahead of God and you will crash, I know this to be true.
What was it that God was trying to show you or teach you but you missed it?
As we put our focus on our purpose, I think we all have to take a minute and look again!
I'm so thankful for those "go back and look again" moments in life! God is so awesome that He will make sure we don't leave anything behind that we need!!
